ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND


The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is a nonprofit organization based in Oakland, California working to advance racial and economic justice to ensure dignity and opportunity for low-income people and people of color. In our 24-year history, we have worked on issues including jump-starting the green jobs movement, promoting civic engagement, violence prevention through youth leadership, and transforming juvenile justice systems in California. We are currently working to end mass incarceration and mass criminalization in the United States through Truth and Reinvestment—moving resources away from failed criminal justice policies and into creating opportunities, also known as “books not bars, jobs not jails, healthcare not handcuffs.” In addition, our programmatic efforts are strong and growing, with the organization sponsoring four bills in Sacramento, building on our success in Alameda County, and working with partners across the country to build a movement to end mass incarceration.


POSITION SUMMARY


The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is seeking a bright, creative, dedicated individual with a passion for racial and economic justice. The Social Media Assistant is a part-time position (20 hours/week) responsible for utilizing our social media platforms to inspire, engage, and mobilize our digital supporters. This person will work closely with the Senior Digital Communications Associate, along with staff from other Ella Baker Center departments to develop and implement a social media digital organizing strategy. The Social Media Assistant should have experience in organizing community members and creating multi-faceted social media strategies for advocacy, legislation, live events, and media campaigns.

 

The Social Media Assistant will be responsible for managing and maintaining all social media platforms, expanding the Ella Baker Center’s digital reach, engaging in a timely manner with followers, and growing EBC’s social media following. The ideal candidate will possess the following skills; be able to engage a diverse audience, be able to work both independently and within a team, strong editing, exceptional writing skills, and creative storytelling are essential.  Preference will be giving to people living in the Bay Area, CA.





PRIMARY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Work with Sr. Digital Communications Associate and consultants to implement organizational messaging and communications strategy on social media platforms.
  • Advance the Ella Baker Center brand and help ensure that branding and messaging are consistent on all of our social media platforms. 
  • Support development of and lead implementation on the organization's social media strategy with the Sr. Digital Communications Associate; write, edit, and schedule social media content.
  • Work with Sr. Digital Communications Associate and programmatic staff to support social media strategies for campaigns, programs, and our legislative agenda.
  • Actively engage in organizing meetings with programmatic staff and coalition partners to help frame our social media strategy and narrative. 
  • Fluency with social media platforms and other digital tools and experience in using these tools to drive action and engagement.
  • Regular reporting and analysis of social media channels to measure growth and engagement. 
  • Grow social media following and online presence while maintaining our design and adhering to organizational guidelines.
  • Attend, record, and live post from occasional in-person events.



REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS


  • 1-3 or more years’ experience in social media management, preferably related to racial and economic justice issues.
  • Excellent written communication skills, editing, proofreading, fact checking, keen attention to detail, and ability to break down complex concepts.
  • Proficiency with multiple social media platforms, and an interest in using these tools to drive action and engagement.
  • Proven commitment to and knowledge of issues relating to racial, economic, and gender justice.
  • Team player attitude, capable of collaborating with team members, strong interpersonal skills including the ability to take feedback.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to stick to deadlines, adept at managing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable and skilled at communicating with a wide diverse audience, understanding a variety of social and economic backgrounds.
  • Respects and has knowledge of cultures, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientations and age groups other than one’s own, able to work effectively with all.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS


This position reports to the Senior Digital Communications Associate while under direct supervision by the Director of Communications at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights.


SALARY


Salary range: $28,500 - $31,200 depending on experience, to be paid hourly at a rate of $27 - $31/hr. This is a part-time 20 hour a week, union, non-salaried position.  Part time employment does not include medical, health or retirement benefits. Sick pay and vacation is accrued at a part time rate of employment.  This position requires the ability to work within an office building setting on an as needed basis with the opportunity to work remotely during COVID restrictions.
